Departure of £25.2m-rated star will actually strengthen Liverpool’s title-bid next season

The Liverpool fans are growing increasingly frustrated in the Transfer Tavern due to reports linking Emre Can with a move away from the club.

The future of Emre Can (valued at £25.2 million by Transfermarkt) has become a dominant theme in Liverpool’s season so far, and the resident Kopites in the tavern are becoming concerned that the rumours could negatively impact on his performances during the final months of the season. Jurgen Klopp has placed plenty of trust in the German international in recent weeks by handing him the captains armband in 3 matches and starting him in each of Liverpool’s last ten Premier League matches.

Only Klopp will know whether his decision making has been part of a conscious effort to convince Can to stay at the club, or purely because he believed his decisions would ultimately benefit the team. Regardless of his motivation for passing Can the armband and selecting him on a regular basis, the rumours concerning his future at the club continue to persist throughout the media.

According to The Liverpool Echo, both Juventus and Real Madrid are interested in signing Can on a free transfer when his deal expires at the end of the season, and although it would be a shame for Liverpool to lose a player of his calibre, his departure may actually help the club to challenge for honours next season.

Can’s departure from the club will force Klopp to sign a new defensive minded midfielder who can provide a shield to the back-four. Liverpool are already set to welcome Naby Keita to the club from RB Leipzig, but he is expected to play in a slightly more advanced role than the one Can has been deployed in this season.

With that to consider, Can’s departure will give Klopp the opportunity to reassess his midfield options and focus on signing a player of genuine defensive quality with a genuine desire to play for Liverpool. Can has shown flashes of brilliance throughout his career at Anfield, but his performances have always suggested that he is holding something back and failing to fulfil his massive potential, so his departure could prove to be a blessing in disguise, as his absence will pave the way for a hungrier, more consistent player to replace him on Merseyside.
