Jurgen Klopp is adamant that Liverpool (as quoted in the Daily Star) won’t be spending in the January transfer window but their current injury problems should force his hand.
The German strengthened his squad heavily during the summer and found the majority of his signings have been instantly successful on Merseyside. Liverpool are currently top of the Premier League, ahead of Manchester City by four points heading into the remainder of the January fixtures. Therefore, it’s easy to see why Klopp believes Liverpool don’t need to splash the cash.
However, injuries have taken their toll in recent weeks and have left the Reds short on options at centre-back. Klopp lost both Joe Gomez and Joel Matip to injury leaving Dejan Lovren and Virgil van Dijk as the only recognised centre-halves at the club. Unsurprisingly, Lovren left the field with an injury against Wolves leading to 16-year-old Dutchman Ki Jana-Hoever making his Liverpool debut.
To compete in a title challenge against one of the best clubs in the world – depth is a necessity. Therefore, Liverpool should make a move for Porto wonderkid – Eder Militao. Valued at £18m by Transfermarkt, the defender moved to Portugal in the summer after spending all of his professional career with Sao Paulo. Militao has been a massive success already in Europe, establishing himself as one of the best centre-backs in the Liga NOS.
Militao is the ideal modern-day defender – quick, strong and great on the ball. The 20-year-old is strong in the tackle, reads the game expertly and is dominant in the air. The Brazilian would slot seamlessly into the defence alongside van Dijk and give Klopp a fantastic option when rotating his squad. Also, Militao is comfortable at right-back meaning he can cover for Trent Alexander-Arnold following the departure of Nathaniel Clyne to Bournemouth.
There is plenty of interest in the Brazil youth international as a result of his impressive performances – Liverpool should make sure he’s on his way to Merseyside as soon as possible.
