Liverpool moved back to the top of the Premier League following a memorable 3-1 victory against Manchester United.

Jurgen Klopp’s side made a blistering start to the game at Anfield, and it was Sadio Mane who broke the deadlock in the first-half, controlling on his chest before beating David de Gea expertly. Luckily for United, they were gifted an equaliser as Alisson Becker spilt a cross into the path of Jesse Lingard. However, Klopp introduced Xherdan Shaqiri after the break and the Swiss international caused havoc, becoming just the second Liverpool player to score two goals during their first game against Manchester United.

While Shaqiri’s match-winning goals were crucial, it was Fabinho who stole the headlines with a masterful midfield performance. The Brazilian was slowly introduced to the first-team but showed his class against the Red Devils, winning tackles and driving Liverpool forward with his range of passing. With Fabinho thriving in the defensive midfield role, it’s hard to see a route back into the first-team for Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson. The England international was introduced off the bench and helped keep Liverpool ticking in the engine room thanks to his tireless pressing.

It’s clear that Fabinho is miles ahead of Henderson in the number six role which should make Klopp consider moving Henderson further up the field. The former Sunderland man enjoyed his best season in a Liverpool shirt in the number eight role under Brendan Rodgers back in 2013/14 when Liverpool almost became champions. His energetic performances meant Henderson was one of the first names on the team sheet and Liverpool looked a different side without him when he was unfortunately suspended during their run in. With the protection of Fabinho behind him, the 28-year-old would flourish – his non-stop running and excellent range of passing would make him a fantastic partner for Naby Keita.

A new role could help Henderson win back the hearts of the Kop.
