Liverpool supporters in the Transfer Tavern have just about got over their side’s disappointing Champions League final defeat at the hands of Real Madrid last month, what with the Reds going down 3-1 to the Spanish giants.
Jurgen Klopp’s men were full of confidence heading into their meeting with the two-times defending champions in Kiev, having got past the likes of Porto, Manchester City, and Roma to reach the showpiece. However, they were second-best in the Ukrainian capital on May 26 as a brace from Gareth Bale alongside Karim Benzema’s opener was enough to seal victory for Real, in turn clinching a third successive Champions League title and 13th in their history.
As such, there have been many despondent Reds fans in the Tavern in recent times, although their mood is likely to be improved by recent reports suggesting that a deal to bring Nabil Fekir to the club is close to completion.
And with that deal close, and two completed for Fabinho and Naby Keita, Klopp must now turn his attentions to solving a key Liverpool issue with the capture of £18 million-rated Bernd Leno (as per Transfermarkt).
Ultimately, the goalkeeping department at Anfield has been a problem area for a while now with neither Loris Karius nor Simon Mignolet doing enough to convince of their capabilities in their respective spells at the club.
And while the former got the nod from Klopp during 2018, his big errors in the Champions League final a few weeks ago further underline that he is simply not good enough to be relied upon, and the Reds are in need of that solid and dependable shot-stopper to bridge the gap to Manchester City in the Premier League next season.
And the arrival of Bayer Leverkusen’s Leno would thus go some way to addressing the issue in the goalkeeping ranks.
The 26-year-old has been at the Bundesliga outfit since 2011 and in recent times has become one of the finest goalkeepers in the German top-flight, not least this term in keeping ten clean sheets and shipping just 40 goals in 30 league appearances for the club.
And with 100 clean sheets in all during his stint at the German side, it’s clear that the 26-year-old is indeed a top-quality goalkeeper and the sort that can seriously bolster Klopp’s ranks at Liverpool – it’s not surprising that Leno has been linked with a move away this summer.
And given he has a reported £22 million release clause in his contract, it’s a deal that would cost considerably less than one for the likes of Jasper Cillessen, Alisson and Jan Oblak, yet the Reds would still be getting a quality goalkeeper, and one that is certainly an upgrade on messrs Karius and Mignolet.
Thus, with a feel-good factor around Anfield at the moment following the addition of Fabinho, alongside the likely arrival of Fekir, Klopp must now seek to solve a key problem area in his squad by moving for Leverkusen’s Leno this summer.
