According to a recent report from A Spor, Liverpool have agreed a contract with defender Domagoj Vida, although have yet to match the centre back's £22 million price-tag. The 29-year-old enjoyed an excellent World Cup with Croatia this summer in helping his country reach the showpiece in Russia earlier this month, although the Besiktas defender was unable to lead them to an unlikely triumph as they went down 4-2 to Didier Deschamps’ France in Moscow.

And Vida’s efforts have reportedly attracted the interest of Jurgen Klopp’s Reds, who for as little as £22 million simply must seal a bargain swoop for the defender - an addition that would go some way to enhancing their Premier League title hopes.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, the Merseyside giants have invested wisely so far this summer in bringing in reinforcements to areas of the squad seemingly in need of improvement, and that is none-more-so evident than the deal to bring goalkeeper Alisson in to replace the unconvincing Loris Karius.

Fabinho and Naby Keita have also made the move to Anfield in a bid to strengthen the midfield department, while Xherdan Shaqiri’s arrival from Stoke City will give Klopp another genuine option in the final third of the pitch - yet one still senses that a centre back is needed.

And that’s because, while Virgil van Dijk’s addition back in January certainly made a big difference in the second half of last season, there remains some doubts surrounding the season-long capabilities of Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip, as both were guilty of high-profile errors last term.

And with both set to miss the start of the Premier League season, Klopp looks set to be short of defensive cover heading into the 2018/19 campaign, and if they are serious about challenging for the title, they cannot afford another start like last term when they were ninth in mid-October.

Yet the addition of Vida would go some way to bolstering those centre back ranks, as the 29-year-old proved his credentials with an excellent World Cup campaign with Croatia earlier this summer.

The defender started six of their seven matches during the competition and even bagged a crucial goal in their quarter-final win over Russia to underline his influence in both boxes - for just £22 million, it would surely represent an absolute bargain.

Yes, Vida will turn 30 next April and as such it’s hardly a nod to the long-term, but based on his efforts in recent years for Dynamo Kiev, Besiktas, and indeed Croatia, there is plenty of football left in the defender, and £22 million would still represent a good price for a club that have spent in excess of £150 million this summer - it would be like loose change.

Significantly though, it would give Klopp another reliable and accomplished option in the centre of defence, which is exactly what they need if they are to rival the likes of Manchester City for the title this term - not many title-winning sides have not had a formidable centre back partnership.

Thus, for just £22 million, the Reds must seek to seal a bargain deal for the centre back, as doing so would enhance their Premier League title hopes for the upcoming season.
