Liverpool supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their team take a giant step closer to the last four of the Champions League with an emphatic 3-0 win over Manchester City in the first leg of their quarter-final clash on Wednesday.
Jurgen Klopp’s men battered Porto 5-0 in the round of 16 to secure their spot in the last eight of Europe’s elite competition, the first time the Merseyside giants have reached that stage since 2009. And the Reds have no intentions of ending their excellent run anytime soon either as first half goals from Mohamed Salah, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Sadio Mane secured a fantastic victory for the Reds, thus setting them up perfectly for the return leg at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday.
As such, there have been many buoyant Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are daring to dream about their side going on and winning the Champions League this season, what with their club 90 minutes away from knocking out one of the favourites for the competition.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Reds fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking right back Trent Alexander-Arnold with a summer move to Juventus.
Yet the Merseysiders simply must forget about letting the 19-year-old leave this summer, as there is only one defender who Liverpool should be selling during the close season, namely centre back Ragnar Klavan.
The 32-year-old was one of Klopp’s first signings as Reds boss back in the summer of 2016, but he has never really shown to be good enough for a Liverpool side that are looking up under the former Borussia Dortmund boss.
The Estonia international has managed just 46 appearances for the Merseyside giants in the last two seasons, with he often playing second fiddle to Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren last season, and indeed those two plus January signing Virgil van Dijk this time round.
Klavan has just 20 Premier League appearances to show for his efforts in the 2016/17 campaign and just 15 so far this time round to underline his lowly position in Klopp’s pecking order, and while he is currently out injured, it’s unlikely that he’d be commanding regular football anyway.
And with van Dijk through the door and already having a positive impact on the Reds backline, and Lovren proving his worth with a fine display against Man City in midweek, it’s clear that Klavan is slowly but surely becoming a surplus to requirements at Anfield.
As such, Liverpool simply must not even consider selling young starlet Alexander-Arnold this summer, as Klavan is the one defender the Reds must seek to let go during the close season.
