Liverpool supporters have been drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side lose the Champions League final at the hands of Real Madrid in Kiev on Saturday.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into the showpiece full of confidence after getting past Porto, Manchester City, and Roma in the knockout stages, but knew they’d have to be at their best to get past Zinedine Zidane’s defending champions. But the Reds weren’t quite at it in the Ukrainian capital on Saturday night as a brace from Gareth Bale, the first one of the best goals ever seen in a Champions League final, alongside Karim Benzema’s opener was enough to seal victory for the Spanish giants, and thus their third European success in a row.
As such, there have been many despondent Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom have been intrigued by recent reports linking them with a move for Barcelona goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen.
And while the 29-year-old would likely be a useful addition to Klopp’s squad, it’s £63 million-rated ace Jan Oblak (as per Transfermarkt) who is the man to transform the Reds into genuine Premier League title contenders next season.
Ultimately, there are some concerns among our resident Reds supporters regarding Cillessen’s lack of first team football in recent times, with the 29-year-old having featured just 21 times for Barcelona since his move there in the summer of 2016, just two of which coming in the league.
And having been number one at his respective club for just three seasons of his career so far, many are worried that he may not have what it takes to perform at the level required over the course of a Premier League season, in which time plenty of questions will be asked of his ability.
Whereas no such concerns are had regarding Oblak’s capabilities, given that the Slovenia international has become one of the best goalkeepers in the world in recent times.
The 25-year-old made the move to Atletico Madrid back in 2014 and has since proven his worth with a staggering 93 clean sheets in 162 appearances for the Spanish club, shipping just 100 goals in the process.
Quite simply, they are remarkable figures, and while some of that is without doubt down to the excellent defence in front of him, Oblak has certainly done his bit as well in helping Diego Simeone’s side become one of the best teams in Europe.
Clearly, the Slovenian star is the calibre of goalkeeper Liverpool need to start challenging for the title.
Loris Karius’ shocker against Real on Saturday pretty much summed up his Reds career to date – he simply isn’t yet good enough to be relied upon over the course of a season, and as such isn’t in the same league as the likes of David de Gea, Thibaut Courtois, and Ederson.
The latter three have won their respective sides points and matches in the last 12 months, and whereas the same can’t really be said of Karius, it can of Oblak.
Yes, luring the Atletico shot-stopper to Anfield will cost a lot of money, but if Liverpool are serious about challenging Manchester City for the title next term, it’s a move they should seek to make as opposed to trying to lure Cillessen away from Barcelona.
