Liverpool supporters in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating their team’s trip to Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday, what with the Reds going into the encounter off the back of a thumping 5-0 victory over Watford.
Jurgen Klopp’s men were the only side in the top eight in league action last time out due to FA Cup commitments, and the Reds certainly took advantage to move seven points clear of fifth place Chelsea in the race for a top four spot. And Mohamed Salah was again the star of the show with four goals in the win, while Roberto Firmino added the other to seal a sensational victory for the Merseyside giants, and one that moved them above Tottenham into third place in the Premier League table.
As such, there have been many delighted Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping their team can continue their fine run of form at Selhurst Park on Saturday, which would in turn tighten their grip on a top four place in the top-flight.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Reds fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that Watford may need to cash in on reported target Abdoulaye Doucoure this summer.
And while there’s little doubting that the 25-year-old would be a useful addition to Klopp’s squad, the Reds should forget about a move for the Hornets ace, as £27 million-rated star Victor Wanyama (as per Transfermarkt) is the perfect man to partner Naby Keita in the Liverpool midfield next term.
Ultimately, the Kenya international has proven his worth over several seasons now in the Premier League, first with Southampton between 2013 and 2016, and more recently with Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham.
In fact, many were suggesting that the 26-year-old was Spurs’ best players last term in their run to second place in the Premier League such were his impressive efforts in the midfield, in which he missed just two league games and struck up a formidable partnership with Mousa Dembele – one that was arguably only bettered by N’Golo Kante and Nemanja Matic for champions Chelsea.
And he is exactly the sort of industrious but ultimately proven midfielder than Klopp needs in the heart of his Liverpool team, as Wanyama would be able to effectively protect the back four, while also get on the ball and look to launch attacks by picking out the frontmen.
Without doubt, Keita’s arrival in the summer is an exciting one for Liverpool fans, especially given that Emre Can is likely to leave the club, but one still senses that another more defensive-minded midfielder is needed to offer the stability required in the middle of the park – Wanyama could be that man.
And having excelled in a very impressive Tottenham team last season, as well as a Southampton side that regularly finished inside the Premier League’s top ten, the 26-year-old would surely offer a better alternative to Doucoure, who himself is a fine midfielder and one seemingly destined for bigger things.
Liverpool were linked with a move for Wanyama earlier this year such were his struggles to get back into the Spurs team after injury, and given his efforts in a top-of-the-table side alongside plentiful more Premier League and European experience, it’s a move Klopp’s side simply have to make this summer to provide the perfect midfield partner for Keita.
