Forget Fellaini: Klopp must instead urge FSG to land his £58.5m-rated Man United teammate

Liverpool supporters in the Transfer Tavern have been using the last few days to look back on their team’s fine season to date, and indeed look forward to what could be in store for their side between now and the summer.

Jurgen Klopp’s men are all but certain to finish in the Premier League’s top four for a second successive campaign, with their 0-0 draw at Merseyside rivals Everton on Saturday keeping them ten points clear of fifth place Chelsea with just five games of the season remaining. And with the Reds scoring a staggering 75 goals from their 33 league games this term, there is huge excitement among our resident Liverpudlians that Klopp can take their side to even greater things in the months and years to come.

As such, there are many optimistic Reds fans in the Tavern at present, several of whom are hoping their team can get back to winning ways in the Premier League when they host Bournemouth on Saturday.

In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Liverpool fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking their side with a move for Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini.

Yet the Merseyside giants simply must forget about a move for the out-of-contract Belgian star, and instead focus their efforts on luring his £58.5 million-rated teammate Anthony Martial (as per Transfermarkt) to Anfield.

Ultimately, the 22-year-old has often struggled for regular football under Jose Mourinho this season, with the France international mustering 26 Premier League appearances so far, only 16 of which have come from the start.

To be fair, Martial has still managed an impressive return of nine goals and five assists in those 26 appearances, but with the likes of Jesse Lingard performing well, alongside the arrival of Alexis Sanchez in January, commanding regular football looks to be a tall order for the young forward.

And with the Frenchman one of nine players reportedly set to be axed by Mourinho over the summer as he bids to build a side that can close the gap on neighbours Manchester City, there is sure to be interest in Martial’s services, with Liverpool one side who should be keeping tabs.

Yes, the Reds possess one of the most exciting and lethal front lines in European football in Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, and Sadio Mane, yet as was proven in Klopp’s selection against Everton, the depth isn’t quite there in the forward ranks, with Danny Ings and Dominic Solanke deputising at Goodison Park.

Neither of those are bad players, but if the Reds are serious about mounting a title charge next season, they need quality options in all areas of the field – Martial would provide them with that.

Clearly, things aren’t quite happening for the 22-year-old at Old Trafford, but it’s clear from his short time in England that he has all the traits to go on and become an outstanding forward – 36 goals in 131 games for United is a pretty decent return.

As such, Klopp should urge FSG against a move for Fellaini, and to instead try and lure Martial to Anfield this summer.
