Liverpool supporters have been pretty upbeat in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side edge closer to securing a top four finish in the Premier League courtesy of a 0-0 draw with Everton in the Merseyside derby on Saturday.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their encounter with their bitter rivals off the back of a remarkable 3-0 win over Manchester City in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final meeting a few days earlier, a result which sets them up perfectly for Tuesday’s return leg at the Etihad Stadium. And manager Klopp made many changes to his side at Goodison Park on Saturday, and it certainly showed in a pretty disjointed display from his team, although they did maintain their eight-year unbeaten run against the Toffees with a point at the weekend.
Consequently, there have been many satisfied Reds fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are already turning their attentions towards Tuesday’s trip to Pep Guardiola’s City, with Liverpool eyeing a last four berth in the Champions League for the first time since 2008.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Liverpudlians to discuss, not least recent reports linking their club with a summer move for Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini.
Yet the Merseysiders should forget about a move for the Belgium international during the close season, and instead turn their attentions towards luring Leicester City’s £16.2 million-rated ace Wilfred Ndidi (as per Transfermarkt) to Anfield.
Ultimately, the 21-year-old has more than proven his worth to the Foxes since his move from Genk back in January 2017, with the midfielder going on to appear 23 times in the second half of last season for the 2016 league champions, before adding an impressive 36 appearances this term to underline his importance to Claude Puel’s side.
In fact, Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at home to Newcastle United was the first game Ndidi has missed in the Premier League this season after his red card at Brighton last week, with it arguable that the Midlands outfit missed his industry in the middle of the park in suffering just their third loss of 2018.
And it’s this type of industry that wouldn’t go amiss in Klopp’s Liverpool midfield next season.
The backline has often been criticised for the Reds’ relatively disappointing defensive displays in recent years, but they don’t always get the sort of protection required from those just in front of them – yet Ndidi would give them that.
The Nigeria international has marshalled the Leicester backline brilliantly this term but also brings genuine quality on the ball as well, and at the tender age of 21, he has the capabilities to make a difference both in the present, and indeed in the future.
And while the Reds are already signing Naby Keita from RB Leipzig this summer to bolster their midfield ranks, the Guinea international is a more offensive-minded midfielder and will undoubtedly add to their quality in that area, but arguably isn’t the industrious, combative ace they need in the middle of the park.
Ndidi is though, and given his efforts for Leicester in the last 16 months or so, alongside the bright future he has in the game, the Reds must forget about a move for 30-year-old Fellaini and instead lure the Nigerian star to Anfield this summer.
