Liverpool supporters in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating their side’s return to Premier League action on Saturday when they travel to Crystal Palace, given they go into the encounter off the back of a 5-0 thumping of Watford.
Jurgen Klopp’s men were the only side in the top eight in league action last time out due to FA Cup commitments, and the Reds certainly took advantage to move seven points clear of fifth place Chelsea in the race for a top four spot. Unsurprisingly, Mohamed Salah was again the star of the show with four goals in the win, while Roberto Firmino added the other to seal an emphatic victory for the Merseyside giants, and one that moved them above Tottenham into third place in the Premier League table.
As such, there have been many delighted Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are sincerely hoping that their team can indeed continue their fine recent form between now and the end of the season, and thus clinch a second successive top four place.
In the meantime though, there has been plenty for our resident Reds fans to get their teeth into, not least the recurrent reports linking their side with a move for Roma goalkeeper Alisson.
And while midfielder Naby Keita is already on his way to Anfield in the summer, there’s little doubt that landing the £40.5 million-rated Alisson (as per Transfermarkt) is the biggest deal the Reds can do this summer.
Ultimately, the defensive unit has been the biggest problem at Anfield for many a year now, but Klopp has sought to improve that by splashing out £75 million on Virgil van Dijk back in January – it’s now time to look to bring in a world-class goalkeeper.
Simon Mignolet has been solid if unspectacular during his time at Anfield, and while Loris Karius has seemingly won the number one jersey in the last few months, questions very much remain regarding his long-term suitability to the role – ultimately, he isn’t as good as the likes of David De Gea and Ederson.
And Liverpool are in need of a goalkeeper of that calibre to really push on and challenge for the Premier League title next season, which is why a move for Alisson this summer is such a big deal.
The 25-year-old has been in wonderful form for Roma since his move there back in 2016, with the Brazil international keeping 21 clean sheets and conceding just 50 goals in 52 appearances for the club, 13 clean sheets of which coming this term in their run to third place in Serie A, and the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
Clearly, compatriot Ederson has been outstanding for Manchester City this term in helping turn them into the dominant force in the Premier League, but it’s Alisson who is currently keeping him out of the Brazil side – that’s how good he is, and that’s how big an impact he could have at Anfield.
So while landing Keita is without doubt an exciting signing for Liverpool fans this summer, luring Alisson to Anfield would unquestionably be their biggest deal of the window.
