Forget Kenedy: Liverpool must instead seek to land his £25.2m-rated Chelsea teammate

Liverpool supporters have been making all the noise in the Transfer Tavern in the last few hours after seeing their side book their place in the Champions League final after a thrilling 7-6 aggregate victory over Roma.

Jurgen Klopp’s men went into the second leg in the Italian capital off the back of a 5-2 success in the opener, a commanding lead and one they never really looked like relinquishing in the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday night. First half goals from Sadio Mane and Georginio Wijnaldum either side of a James Milner own goal strengthened their position, and although Roma netted three times in the second half, it wasn’t enough to prevent the Reds from reaching the showpiece later this month.

Subsequently, there have been many delighted Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hugely excited by their side’s meeting with defending champions Real Madrid in Kiev on May 26, as the Reds go in search of a sixth European title.

In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Liverpool fans to discuss, not least recent reports (via The Newcastle Chronicle) suggesting that their club have joined the race for Chelsea winger Kenedy, who has excelled on loan at Newcastle United in the second half of the season.

And while the 22-year-old would likely be a useful addition to Klopp’s squad, the Merseyside giants should forget about him and instead target a move for his £25.2 million-rated Blues teammate David Luiz (as per Transfermarkt) this summer.

Ultimately, the Reds are pretty well-stocked in the attacking department, what with Mane, Roberto Firmino, and Mohamed Salah scoring a sensational 89 goals between them this season, in turn forming one of the most lethal front lines in world football.

As such, it’ll be difficult for Kenedy to command regular football at Anfield and even more difficult for Klopp to guarantee him it, whereas it’s clear from their struggles defensively over the course of the campaign that defensive reinforcements may be needed this summer.

Yes, Virgil van Dijk’s arrival has made a big difference to the Reds rearguard, but there remains some question marks over the season-long capabilities of fellow centre halves Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip.

Whereas no such concerns are had regarding Luiz’s abilities.

Ultimately, while struggling for regular game time at Chelsea this term, one mustn’t forget that the Brazil international played an integral part in helping the Blues win the Premier League title last season in helping to form a sensational back three alongside Gary Cahill and Cesar Azpilicueta.

In fact, the 31-year-old was deservedly named in the PFA Team of the Season such were his impressive efforts in the heart of Antonio Conte’s backline, but what was most impressive was that Luiz returned to England a much better all round defender, as opposed to the liability he was when he was last at Chelsea between 2011 and 2014.

And that is why Klopp must seek to land the Blues outcast this summer, as not only does he have great pedigree on the ball, but he is now extremely adept off it as well, and would surely form a great partnership with van Dijk, who is similarly as good off the ball as he is on it.

As such, the Reds should forget about Kenedy and instead seek to lure Chelsea teammate Luiz to Anfield this summer.
