Liverpool supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team tighten their grip on a top four spot in the Premier League courtesy of a 4-1 hammering of West Ham at Anfield on Saturday.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash with the East London outfit off the back of thumping Porto 5-0 in their first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie, thus all but sealing their place in the quarter-finals of Europe’s elite competition. And the Reds are well on their way to returning to the competition next term as well as goals from Emre Can, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, and Sadio Mane secured a routine success over David Moyes’ Hammers on Saturday, moving them up to second in the division only for Manchester United to reclaim that position with victory over Chelsea on Sunday.
Consequently, there have been many buoyant Liverpudlians in the Tavern in the last few days, several of whom are sincerely hoping that their side can continue their impressive run of form when they host Newcastle United this weekend.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Reds fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that their club are interested in a move for Southampton midfielder Mario Lemina.
However, the Merseyside giants should forget about a move for the relatively inexperienced Gabon international this summer, and instead focus their efforts on luring Victor Wanyama to Anfield.
Ultimately, the 26-year-old has gone on to become a hugely influential figure in Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham side since his arrival back in 2016, appearing in all but two of their 38 Premier League games last season to help Spurs finish second behind champions Chelsea.
The Kenya international struck up a formidable central midfield partnership with either Mousa Dembele, another clinically underrated midfielder, or Eric Dier, providing sufficient protection in front of the back four as well as the ability to patrol things in the middle of the park and launch attacks.
And the industrious midfielder is exactly the sort of player Liverpool need in their central midfield ranks, especially with Emre Can increasingly likely to leave the club this summer at the expiration of his contract.
Wanyama has proven his capabilities at the top level of the Premier League in the last 18 months or so, and although injury has ruled him out of much of this campaign, his most recent displays suggest that he is slowly but surely getting back up to speed once again.
However, there were reports not too long ago that the Reds were keeping tabs on Wanyama’s situation ahead of a possible move this summer, and with the 26-year-old having started just once in the league since injury, it’s plausible that they could be looking to let him go this summer.
And while Lemina has certainly impressed in his first season in English football, Wanyama has greater experience overall and near the top of the league to come into this Liverpool midfield and make a massive impact – he could take them to the next level.
As such, the Reds should forget about a move for the Saints midfielder, and instead focus their efforts on landing £27 million-rated midfield enforcer Wanyama (as per Transfermarkt) this summer.
