Forget Lemina: Liverpool should land his £10.8m-rated Southampton teammate instead

Liverpool supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side strengthen their case for a top four finish in the Premier League courtesy of a 4-1 victory over West Ham last time out.

Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash with the Hammers off the back of brushing aside Porto 5-0 in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 encounter, all but booking their place in the quarter-finals of Europe’s elite competition. And the Merseyside giants are well on course for qualifying for next year’s competition as well as goals from Emre Can, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, and Sadio Mane secured a comprehensive win for Klopp’s side, a result which did move them up to second in the Premier League only for Manchester United to reclaim that position with victory over Chelsea.

Subsequently, there have been many delighted Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping their team can continue their excellent run of form when they host Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle United on Saturday.

In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Reds fans to discuss, not least recent reports suggesting that their side are interested in a move for Southampton midfielder Mario Lemina this summer.

Yet the Merseysiders should forget about a move for the Gabon international, and instead consider his £10.8 million-rated Saints teammate Oriol Romeu instead (as per Transfermarkt).

Ultimately, the Spaniard has played a key part in Southampton’s success since his move to St Mary’s back in 2015, making 111 appearances for the South Coast outfit, 35 of which coming in the Premier League last season to help them to an eighth place finish under Claude Puel.

And it was last season in particular, alongside some impressive displays this term, that have underlined the 26-year-old as a very good defensive midfielder, and one who could give Liverpool the perfect balance in the middle of the park.

Yes, Romeu can sometimes be too slow in possession but the Reds have several other midfield players like Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Adam Lallana to do that job of getting the ball forward and launching attacks – one of the main criticisms of Liverpool when they have the lead is their ability to slow things down, which Romeu would surely help to do.

Importantly though, it’s defensively that is the issue, and that is where Romeu would slot perfectly into Klopp’s team.

Lemina has been impressive for Mauricio Pellegrino’s side this season, but with just 20 Premier League appearances under his belt, it’s far too early to suggest that he could be the answer to Liverpool’s defensive midfield issues.

Romeu, on the other hand, has been a regular for Southampton for a while now, and having already made a move to a big club in his career in Chelsea back in 2011, he would surely seize the chance to prove his worth at a top side once again after his struggles in West London.

And at the age of 26, the former Spain youth international has time on his side and should be entering his peak years in the near future, which based on his efforts so far could be very good indeed.

He may not have enjoyed his best season to date, but his displays last term for Southampton as well as his overall qualities could seriously benefit Liverpool, and thus give Klopp the sort of defensive midfielder he appears to need in his starting eleven.

Thus, the Reds should forget about Lemina and instead go after his fellow Saints midfielder this summer.
