Liverpool supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side seal a second successive Premier League top four finish courtesy of a 4-0 thumping of Brighton last weekend.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their final day clash with the Seagulls knowing that a point would be enough to secure Champions League football once again, although the Reds went one better and produced a fine attacking display to swat aside Chris Hughton’s side at Anfield. And with a Champions League final to come next weekend against defending champions Real Madrid, things could yet get a whole lot better for our resident Liverpool fans between now and the end of the campaign.
In the meantime though, there has been plenty for those Liverpudlians lining up at the bar to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking their club with a move for goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, who will leave Juventus at the end of the campaign.
Manchester City are also thought to be keen on the World Cup-winning star, yet he would be better served opting for Klopp’s Liverpool given the greater likelihood for first team football at the end of his career.
Ultimately, Brazil international Ederson has been outstanding for Pep Guardiola’s City since making the move there last summer, arguably having just as big an influence on the Premier League champions this term than the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling.
Yes, Claudio Bravo is nowhere near good enough to dethrone the 24-year-old, but it’s also difficult to see Buffon doing the same given his age, and indeed Ederson’s efforts in the last 12 months.
Whereas there could be an opening for the Italian ace at Anfield given the uncertainty surrounding the current goalkeeping situation, what with neither Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet overly convincing during their respective stints at the club.
Yes, the former appears to have got the nod from Klopp in recent times to suggest that he is the long-term option, but he still isn’t the world-class shot-stopper they appear to need to make the step up towards Premier League title contenders – Buffon is though.
And with Ederson also that calibre of goalkeeper, both in terms of shot-stopping and indeed with the ball at his feet, the 40-year-old simply isn’t going to play regularly at City, which is likely something he is looking for given he is very much entering the final few years of his career.
As such, while City is likely to be an attractive proposition for the 2006 World Cup winner, he would be better served making the move to Anfield this summer.
