Liverpool supporters have been pretty buoyant in the Transfer Tavern during the current international break after having seen their team enter the two-week interruption off the back of a thumping 5-0 win over Watford in the Premier League.
Jurgen Klopp’s men took advantage of the FA Cup commitments last weekend, what with the Reds being the only side in the top eight in action, to open up a seven-point lead over fifth place Chelsea in the race for Champions League qualification. And it was Mohamed Salah who was again the star of the show with four goals in the rout, with Roberto Firmino adding the other to seal a comprehensive victory for Klopp’s side, a result which moved them above Tottenham into third place in the Premier League table with seven games to go.
Thus, there have been many thrilled Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping their team can continue their fine form between now and the end of the season, and thus secure back-to-back top four finishes in the Premier League.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Reds fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking goalkeeper Simon Mignolet with a move away this summer following his demotion in Klopp’s goalkeeping pecking order.
And while sanctioning the 30-year-old’s departure this summer is something the Merseyside giants have to consider, they simply must prioritise getting rid of striker Daniel Sturridge, who surely doesn’t have a future at Anfield.
Ultimately, the England international has struggled for regular gametime ever since Klopp took over as manager back in October 2015, to the point that he was shipped out on loan to West Brom back in January in a bid for regular football, and thus to get back into the national team set-up.
However, injuries have once again plagued the 28-year-old during his spell at the Hawthorns, managing just three Premier League appearances for Alan Pardew’s Championship-bound Baggies, and failing to net in any of them.
Clearly, Sturridge is not the striker he was a few years ago, a striker who pretty much netted once in every two games he played for Liverpool, and one who was very much near the top of the pecking order when it came to the England starting eleven – after all, he bagged the winner against Wales in Euro 2016.
And with little over a year left on his current deal, and there seemingly no end to his injury troubles, the Reds simply have to prioritise getting rid of the 28-year-old this summer, both for them to get him off the wage bill, and for the man himself to get a fresh start somewhere to revive his career.
Yes, Mignolet seems likely to leave as well given his recent blow in losing the number one spot to Loris Karius, but the Merseysiders must instead focus on sanctioning the departure of £18 million-rated Sturridge (as per Transfermarkt) during the close season.
