Liverpool supporters in the Transfer Tavern are just about getting over their side’s disappointing 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League final last month, in turn seeing the Reds fail to clinch a sixth European crown.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their meeting with the two-times defending champions off the back of beating Porto, Manchester City, and Roma en route to the showpiece, and thus full of confidence that they could get the job done in Kiev on May 26. However, the Merseyside giants were second-best, and a brace from Gareth Bale alongside Karim Benzema’s opener sealed victory for Real, thus securing a third straight Champions League title, and 13th in their illustrious history.
Consequently, there have been many despondent Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are turning their attentions towards the summer window and as such are likely to be intrigued by recent reports linking them with a move for Stoke City’s Xherdan Shaqiri.
And while the Switzerland international would likely be a useful addition to Klopp’s squad, he rightly doesn’t see him as a ‘marquee’ signing, with £58.5 million-rated ace Anthony Martial (as per Transfermarkt) an addition which would fall into that category.
Ultimately, 26-year-old Shaqiri enjoyed his best season to date for the Potters this term in netting eight goals and laying on seven assists for the Staffordshire-based outfit, although he wasn’t able to inspire them to Premier League safety.
And the fact that he hasn’t consistently been able to produce the goods, despite the flashes of brilliance, during his time at the bet365 Stadium is of some concern to our resident Reds fans, although many agree that, for a reported £12 million, it would be a shrewd addition in bolstering the attacking ranks.
However, in terms of a marquee signing, Manchester United’s Martial is the man they have to bring to Anfield this summer, as although he wasn’t always first choice under Jose Mourinho this season, he possesses huge amounts of talent, and has undoubted potential.
The France international, who only made the standby list for this summer’s World Cup in Russia, still managed to score 11 goals and lay on nine assists in what many viewed as a frustrating and underwhelming season for the 22-year-old.
Yet his tally of 17 goals and nine assists in his first season in English football back in 2015/16 suggests that he certainly has what it takes to succeed at Premier League level, and in a Liverpool side that can be irresistible and relentless going forward, he would surely flourish.
And with the forward ranks lacking the sufficient depth outside of the lethal front three of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, and Mohamed Salah, the 22-year-old is also an addition Klopp needs to help take the club to the next level next time round.
Thus, while Shaqiri’s arrival would be a useful one in offering something slightly different going forward, the marquee addition would undoubtedly be Martial, which is a deal they have to get done this summer if they are to bridge the gap to Premier League champions Manchester City in the 2018/19 campaign.
