The Liverpool supporters are feeling confident in the Transfer Tavern ahead of their huge Champions League fixture against Manchester City this evening.
Jurgen Klopp’s side arrive at The Etihad Stadium tonight with a fantastic opportunity to move into the semi-final of the competition after recording a 3-0 victory in the first-leg. The result was one which shocked the footballing world to its core, but there is still plenty of work for the Reds to do to ensure they complete the job tonight.
The entirety of Liverpool’s team were in fine form at Anfield last week, particularly Virgil Van Dijk who was exceptional at the heart of the defence. Gabriel Jesus barely had a sniff of the action against a sturdy Liverpool back-four, and a core reason for that was due to the quality of Van Dijk’s organisational and leadership skills which ensured the defence almost completely stifled City’s attacking players.
The tie takes on a completely different dynamic tonight in Manchester, but if Liverpool are to emerge as winners of the two-legged affair they will need Van Dijk to emulate his performance from last week. However, the quality of Van Dijk’s display may not be the most crucial to Liverpool’s success, as Lorius Karius (valued at £7.2 million by Transfermarkt) is likely to face an onslaught on his goal tonight.
After losing against both Liverpool and Manchester United in the space of just four days, City will be gunning for revenge tonight, and if Karius makes even the slightest of mistakes he will certainly be punished by the clinical Citizens. After a long battle for the number one shirt with Simon Mignolet, it appears that the German goalkeeper has finally convinced Klopp that he is the best stopper at the club, but the jury is still out on whether he has the necessary ability to remain at the club in the long-term.
Plenty of supporters believe that Liverpool should prioritise the signing of a new goalkeeper in the summer window to finally resolve the apparent goalkeeping crisis at the club, but a match-winning performance from Karius against City would go along way to shifting that opinion.
Liverpool are facing their biggest match of the season this evening, and every player will need to be at their brilliant best to ensure they finish the job they started so sublimely last week, especially Karius who could single-handedly ensure that his side progress to the semi-finals with an inspired display between the sticks.
