The Liverpool fans are feeling apprehensive in the Transfer Tavern ahead of their huge fixture against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon.
Jurgen Klopp welcomes Mauricio Pochettino and his Tottenham side to Anfield this weekend for a fixture which could determine the outcome of the top-four this season. A defeat for Spurs would be a disastrous result as they would be cut 5 points adrift of Liverpool, but that scenario looks incredibly likely considering Pochettino’s abysmal record away from home against the top-six. However, a Spurs victory would see them leapfrog Liverpool into the top-four, so the resident Kopites are understandably feeling some pre-match nerves in the tavern.
Liverpool’s victory over Manchester City in January will certainly give Klopp’s side a mental edge ahead of the clash, but the fact they conceded three goals that day will give Spurs plenty of reason to believe that a victory is possible.
City’s equalising goal that day arrived courtesy of Leroy Sane, as the German burst into the area before smashing a rasping left-footed effort through the gloves of Lorius Karius (valued at £7.2 million by Transfermarkt) at the near post. In the aftermath of proceedings, Karius received a barrage of criticism for failing to keep out Sane’s effort, which was a little on the harsh side given the pace of the shot.
However, big-matches are often defined and decided by fine margins and the smallest of mistakes, so Karius simply has to step up and ensure he is not culpable for any errors against Tottenham Hotspur. There is no doubt that Spurs will create chances and expose Liverpool’s defence, so Karius’ performance may well prove to be the difference between the two sides.
The Liverpool supporters have long complained about their goalkeeping options, but Karius could prove his doubters wrong and cement his place as Liverpool’s number one with a match-winning performance on Sunday.
