The Liverpool fans here in the Transfer Tavern are frustrated by the club’s return to the Champions League.
Indeed, while our resident Reds feel it was important the club did not lose their opening group game last night, the fact they let a lead slip against Sevilla has seriously annoyed our local Liverpudlians.
The kind of defensive frailty that’s proved a sewing motif during Jurgen Klopp’s tenure in charge at Anfield reared it’s ugly head again last night, much to the frustration of the Kopites who frequent in their droves.
So, while he’s never proved to be the most popular figure amongst the club’s support, comments made by Chelsea legend Frank Lampard in the wake of last night’s 2-2 stalemate have largely been agreed with.
Lampard was speaking as a pundit on BT Sport and explained that, despite Liverpool’s quite devastating attacking intent, Klopp’s team would continue to struggle if they do not sort out their defensive mistakes.
‘We saw both sides of Liverpool, lots of good stuff – fast play, entertaining stuff to watch,’ Lampard told BT Sport (via the Daily Mail) after the match.
‘When it clicks they can beat any team in the world, but if they’re going to make the basic mistakes they can make then you can lose points in a game you’re in a fantastic position to win.’
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that Lampard is right.
Until Klopp either buys a new defender or finds a new system, it’s hard to take the Reds seriously when it comes to challenging for top honours.
