Liverpool supporters in the Transfer Tavern are slowly getting over their side’s Champions League final defeat last month, and are now looking ahead to the remainder of the summer transfer window.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went in search of a sixth European crown in Kiev little over a week ago against two-times defending champions Real Madrid, but the Reds were second-best on the day as a Gareth Bale brace alongside Karim Benzema’s opener sealed victory for the Spanish giants. However, the Merseyside side’s fine efforts in reaching the final leaves many optimistic for the coming 2018/19 season, although it’s clear that additions are needed to turn Klopp’s side into Premier League title contenders.
And several of our resident Liverpudlians are likely to be interested by recent reports linking Everton with Newcastle United defender Jamaal Lascelles, who was linked with Klopp’s men earlier in the year.
And these fresh Everton reports should trigger the Reds into making a move for the £13.5 million-rated lynchpin (as per Transfermarkt) following his mightily impressive campaign for Rafa Benitez’s Magpies this time round.
Ultimately, the 24-year-old played as big a part anybody in inspiring the North East giants to a tenth place finish upon their return to the Premier League this term, with the defender appearing in 33 of their 38 league matches, missing the other five only as a result of injury.
And with several impressive displays in the heart of Benitez’s defence, be it making crucial blocks and last-ditch tackles in his own box to bagging vital goals at the other end, the Englishman has no doubt proven his credentials in the top-flight – he was perhaps a tad unfortunate not to receive an England call-up over the course of the season.
And although Virgil van Dijk’s arrival at Liverpool back in January has certainly had a positive impact on the Reds defence, questions still remain over the season-long capabilities of fellow centre backs Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip, both of whom made costly errors during the campaign.
Yet no such doubts are had regarding Lascelles’ consistency and overall ability after a sterling campaign at St James’ Park, and alongside the authoritative and dependable van Dijk, one of the best centre backs in the division, the 24-year-old is only likely to get even better, and thus knock on the door of the England set-up.
And if Liverpool are serious about challenging Manchester City for the title next term, they have to plug those obvious gaps in their squad, and the second centre back slot, alongside the goalkeeping place, is a void they have to fill.
And that is why these recent reports that Everton are keen on Lascelles, what with the Toffees also in need of defensive reinforcements after an unconvincing campaign this time round, should prompt and trigger Klopp’s side into making a move for the defender, as they simply won’t want to miss out on him to their Merseyside rivals.
