Liverpool supporters have been very downbeat in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team lose 3-1 to Real Madrid in the Champions League final on Saturday to suffer a third final defeat under Jurgen Klopp.
The German took over at Anfield back in October 2015 and led the Reds to the League Cup final and the Europa League final the year after, although his team came up short against Manchester City and Sevilla in the respective showpieces. And it wasn’t to be third time lucky for the ex-Borussia Dortmund chief on Saturday either as a Gareth Bale brace alongside Karim Benzema’s opener sealed victory for the Spanish giants, in turn clinching a third successive Champions League title.
As such, there have been many disappointed Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are turning their attentions towards the summer, and thus are likely to be intrigued by recent reports linking Chelsea with a move for target Alisson.
And with several top sides in the hunt for the Roma ace, these recent reports should shift Liverpool’s full focus towards securing a deal for £63 million-rated star Jan Oblak (as per Transfermarkt).
Ultimately, Chelsea’s reported interest in Alisson, what with Thibaut Courtois seemingly on his way out of the club, is only going to make it even more difficult for Klopp to bring the Brazil international to Anfield, as if it wasn’t difficult enough given Real Madrid are also thought to be keen.
Yes, the 26-year-old is an outstanding goalkeeper and one of the best in the world, but so is Atletico Madrid’s Oblak, who has played a key part in helping Diego Simeone’s side become one of the best teams defensively in Europe.
The Slovenia international made the move to the Spanish capital back in 2014 and has since kept a staggering 93 clean sheets in just 162 appearances for the club, in which time he has shipped only 100 goals.
Quite simply, they are remarkable figures and testament not only to Oblak’s ability as a goalkeeper, but also the Atletico backline as a whole – but there is no mistaking the fact that Oblak is one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
So while Alisson reportedly remains Liverpool’s ‘primary’ goalkeeping target for the summer, Chelsea’s own interest in the Roma shot-stopper makes it even trickier for Klopp’s side to get a deal done. And they simply won’t want to miss out on signing a goalkeeper this summer.
As such, these recent reports should be a big moment in the Reds’ quest for a shot-stopper, as it should shift their focus away from Alisson, and firmly towards getting a deal done for reported target Oblak.
