Our Liverpool fans here in the Transfer Tavern are certainly pictures of frustration right now by the bar and you can certainly understand why they feel like that.
The men from Anfield started this season well but losing to Manchester City and drawing with Sevilla and Burnley has left many Reds feeling a bit down this September.
Certainly, then, work is needing to be done before they can think about winning trophies this season and many certainly wish Virgil van Dijk had signed for the club in the summer.
He didn’t, of course, but, as revealed by The Times, it actually appears as though the Dutchman could have joined if it had been solely up to Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino.
Indeed, the report is suggesting that the recently appointed Saints manager was open to letting the defender go as the funds they would have received would have allowed him to reinvest in the squad.
Instead, though, that wish was overruled by the Saints’ board and so Liverpool fans will have to rue this latest revelation as they once again have defensive issues this season.
The Reds look great going forward but in nearly all their games this season we have seen moments of utter catastrophe at the back for their team.
For sure, then, they need a new defender as soon as possible and it does seem as though they came frustratingly close to getting the one they wanted – van Dijk.
