Full of Regret: Liverpool and Lazar Markovic - Liverpool

Sometimes signings just do not work out as clubs will have planned for them to go and Liverpool are no strangers to seeing men with potential arrive at Anfield and fail to hit the heights touted for them.

However, many will not have been as disappointing as Lazar Markovic.

The Serbia international joined Liverpool in the summer of 2014 when the Fenway Sports Group decided to splash a fee thought to be around £20million on him after making a name for himself during his time at Benfica.

The optimism around his signing would have been extremely high as the then-20-year-old had been extremely impressive for the Portuguese outfit and had just helped them secure a top-flight title.

Markovic also scored seven goals in 49 appearances during the 2013-14 campaign as Benfica sealed a domestic treble and reached the Europa League final.

But, as we all know, things really did not go to plan for the Brendan Rodgers signing.

Making 34 appearances across all competitions in his first season at Anfield and scoring three goals, he was sent to Fenerbahce the next summer to try and help him develop his game and get him ready for a potential return.

But, his time in Istanbul ended prematurely as a hamstring injury in February meant he would miss the rest of the season.

Things did not improve for Markovic the following campaign either, with spells at Sporting Lisbon and Hull City, before January 2018 saw him head to Belgium and join Anderlecht, who were far from impressed with his condition and fitness levels and was subsequently put on a plan.

January of this year (2019) saw him head to Fulham on loan on the final day of the transfer window, however, it looks as though his nightmare in football is set to continue.

The 25-year-old has made just one appearance for the west London outfit since joining them and Voetbal Krant have claimed the Cottagers have no interest in keeping the Serbian on their books.

FSG must seriously regret the whole Markovic ordeal and will surely be hoping they never have to endure another one like it at Liverpool in the future.
