Liverpool supporters have been pretty downbeat in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team lose for just the fourth time in the Premier League this season after going down 2-1 at Manchester United on Saturday.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash at Old Trafford just two points adrift of the Red Devils in the table, and having won each of their preceding three league games. Yet two Marcus Rashford goals in the first half proved to do the damage for Jose Mourinho’s United, and although the visitors did get one back in the second period through Eric Bailly’s own goal, they were unable to get the crucial second to prevent a fourth league loss of the campaign, and thus their slip to fourth place in the Premier League table.
Consequently, there have been many despondent Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, yet there appears to be some good news for the Reds if a recent report from The Independent is anything to go by, which suggests that their club are at the ‘front of the queue’ in the race to land Leipzig’s Timo Werner this summer.
The 22-year-old made the move to the Bundesliga outfit back in 2016 and played a huge part in their success last season, netting 21 goals and laying on seven assists in 31 league games to help the club to second place in the German top-flight, and thus a spot in this term’s Champions League.
And with 17 goals in all competitions this time round, the young forward continues to go from strength to strength, to the point that there are many sides reportedly keen on landing the Germany international this summer.
Yet reports suggest that Liverpool chief Klopp is at the ‘front of the queue’ in the quest to sign the 22-year-old, in welcoming news likely to delight our resident Liverpool fans following a disappointing weekend on the pitch last time out.
Landlord’s verdict: Timo Werner has been making a name for himself in the Bundesliga in the last 18 months or so, bagging 21 goals for Leipzig in their sensational run to second place last season, and adding 17 more this time round to underline his credentials.
Unsurprisingly, several clubs are reportedly keeping tabs on the 22-year-old, yet it is Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool who reportedly lead the chase, with the Reds reportedly at the ‘front of the queue’ in pursuit of the Germany international.
Ultimately, the Reds will be targeting a Premier League title push next season, and adding even greater firepower to their attacking ranks may well help them to reel Manchester City in next time round.
But whether they are able to fend off the competition and land Werner this summer remains to be seen.
