It’s proving to be a summer to forget for the Liverpool fans propping up the bar in the Transfer Tavern.
Big pursuits for the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Naby Keita don’t look as if they will end positively for our resident Reds and, as if that wasn’t bad enough, they’ve had to deal with constant suggestions their star man could leave.
Indeed, Barcelona are said to have bid big money for Anfield’s brilliant Brazilian, Philippe Coutinho, and it’s fair to say such rumours have seriously worried our local Kopites.
So, reports from ESPN have at least proved rather promising.
They claim the Merseyside giants remain unmoved in their stance when it comes to keeping the 25-year-old midfielder, despite interest from the Camp Nou. The former Inter Milan youngster has reportedly featured in all of the club’s pre-season activities and club staff are not thought to have seen any change in his attitude.
Having only penned a new five-year deal with the club last summer, Liverpool are understood to have ensured there was no release clause in his contract, so our drinkers are somewhat relaxed about the situation now.
Back in the Champions League, they hope the Brazil star sticks around to lead their European adventure.
When a team like Barcelona register their interest in a player, they usually get them. Liverpool know that all too well, having watched Luis Suarez depart for the Camp Nou, not long after Champions League-qualification and a new contract.
Still, perhaps Jurgen Klopp really could keep a hold of Coutinho for at least another season. The idea of warding the La Liga juggernauts off forever may be unrealistic, but even convincing him to stay another year would seriously help the Reds.
