Liverpool supporters have been pretty downbeat in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side lose for just the fourth time in the Premier League this season courtesy of a 2-1 defeat at Manchester United on Saturday.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash with the Red Devils just two points behind them in the table, and off the back of winning their previous three league matches. Yet a Marcus Rashford brace in the first half proved to be the difference at Old Trafford, and although the Reds did get one back courtesy of an Eric Bailly own goal midway through the second period, Klopp’s side were unable to get the all important second to prevent a fourth defeat of the campaign, and thus their slip to fourth place in the Premier League.
Consequently, there have been many despondent Liverpudlians in the Tavern in the last few days, yet some great news has emerged for young striker Rhian Brewster (as per The Daily Telegraph), as the 17-year-old is set to be promoted to the first team as of next season.
The England Under-17 World Cup winner is making his way up through the ranks at Anfield and currently turns out for the club’s development squad, although he hasn’t featured for them since January after suffering ankle ligament damage in their 3-2 defeat to Manchester City.
However, with six goals and seven assists for the Under-23s this term, Brewster is clearly heading in the right direction, and it appears that his meteoric rise is set to continue as reports suggest that manager Klopp will promote the wonderkid to the Liverpool first team as of next season.
And this is sure to come as great news to Brewster and indeed the club’s supporters, what with the 17-year-old set for an extremely bright future in the game.
Landlord’s verdict: Rhian Brewster played a huge part in England’s incredible Under-17 World Cup win last summer, and he has taken that form into this season with Liverpool’s Under-23 squad.
The 17-year-old has scored six goals and laid on seven assists for the development side this term to underline his credentials, although an ankle injury sustained against Manchester City back in January has brought his campaign to an early close.
Nonetheless, it appears that first team boss Jurgen Klopp is extremely happy with the youngster’s progress, as he will reportedly promote him to the first team ready for next season, which is sure to come as great news and a welcome boost to Brewster as he seeks a return to full fitness ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.
