Liverpool supporters in the Transfer Tavern are feeling slightly uncomfortable heading into the final day of the Premier League season on Sunday, what with their side still having yet to secure their place in the top four.
Jurgen Klopp’s men haven’t been in great form recently in winning just one of their last five league games, thus opening the door for fifth place Chelsea to usurp them in the race for a Champions League spot. However, the Blues only mustering a 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town on Wednesday has somewhat reduced the pressure on the Merseyside giants ahead of their clash with Brighton on Sunday, as a draw will be enough to seal back-to-back top four finishes.
Nonetheless, there are some nervous Reds supporters in the Tavern at present, as although their side have a Champions League final to look forward to at the end of the month, their recent form has been anything but what it was earlier in the campaign.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Liverpudlians to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking Everton with a summer move for Newcastle United lynchpin Jamaal Lascelles.
Chelsea and Tottenham are also thought to be keen on the 24-year-old, and Liverpool should also throw their hat into the ring and indeed win the heavyweight race for the defender, as he could be the ideal partner for Virgil van Dijk in the heart of Klopp’s backline.
Ultimately, Lascelles has enjoyed an outstanding season in the middle of Rafa Benitez’s defence, appearing in 32 of their 37 Premier League matches, missing the other five only as a result of injury.
And with several impressive displays in helping the Magpies retain their Premier League status, the centre back has earned many rave reviews from several punters in the Tavern, some of whom reckon he could do a job at a top six club in the years to come.
And with Liverpool arguably in need of a partner for Netherlands international van Djik, the Englishman could be the ideal addition this summer.
Former Southampton star van Dijk has no doubt made a big impact on the Reds backline since his arrival in January, but there remain question marks over the capabilities of the likes of Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip over the course of gruelling campaign, even if the former has improved in recent times.
Yet Lascelles’ efforts in admirably leading a club under huge pressure to deliver and with huge expectations this term have to be taken into account – he’s perhaps unfortunate not to have earned an England cap this season such have been his efforts.
And at the tender age of 24, the centre back is only going to improve, and alongside and learning from one of the best defenders in the top-flight in van Dijk, that learning process is only going to be accelerated.
Significantly though, Lascelles would also be a signing for the present, and with the Reds needing to tighten up defensively in the Premier League next term to sustain a title challenge, he’s a player that would certainly aid in that quest.
As such, Klopp’s side must seek to join the heavyweight pursuit of the £6.3 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt), and indeed go on and win it this summer.
