Charlie Adam only arrived on Merseyside last year yet could soon be headed for the exit door.According to the Daily Mail, the Scottish international could be used as a makeweight in Brendan Rodgers’ attempts to sign Fulham star Clint Dempsey this summer according to the Daily Mail.
Adam started brightly for Liverpool last year with several impressive performances, yet his form waned as the season progressed. Side-lined due to a knee injury towards the end of the season, Adam is thought to want to stay at Anfield in an attempt to prove to the new boss that he has what it takes to play Rodgers’ style of football.
Yet reports suggest that with Rodgers’ keen to bring in Joe Allen and Dempsey as soon as possible, Adam could simply be surplus to requirements on Merseyside.
The question is will he be missed by Liverpool? The answer – no. True Adam was bright towards the beginning of last year yet his miraculous passing and brilliant set pieces for Blackpool, which earned him the title of the best set piece taker in the Premier League according to Sir Alex, failed to materialize at Anfield.
With Rodgers desperate to sign Joe Allen from Swansea, surely Adam will not have a place in the starting 11. With Lucas Leiva coming back from injury, Steven Gerrard’s place untouchable and Rodgers’ support of Henderson this pre-season, Adam has already slipped down the pecking order in the Liverpool midfield. The prospect of adding Joe Allen and Clint Dempsey to such a group would only reduce his value further.
For me, if it works, using Adam as part of the Dempsey deal is a no brainer. Liverpool desperately need goals next season if they are to develop on a poor campaign last year.
The 29-year-old US international has shown at Craven Cottage what he can do in front of goal in the Premier League. In addition he would be a good attacking threat in the midfield as well as a mentor and partner for new signing Fabio Borini.
Dempsey’s versatility also gives Liverpool more options on the left side of their attack, a position Stewart Downing struggled to make his own last year.
All in all, Dempsey would be more valuable to the Reds than Adam – that is the truth. Rodgers won’t miss the former Blackpool man should he depart from Anfield and nor shall most of the fans: many didn’t believe he was good enough for their side in the first place. With the youth of Allen likely to arrive also, Adam’s Anfield days look to be over.Like what the TT have on offer? Sign up for more notifications!
