Image: Divisive Liverpool figure in rather impressive statistic despite criticism

While the Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are happy their season isn’t over just yet, they are realistic in their hopes of beating Chelsea to the Premier League title, having drawn with the Blues at Anfield last night.

Perhaps indicative of their campaign thus far, goalkeeper Simon Mignolet was at his best and his worst last night, both allowing and preventing their visitors to score. Early on in the first-half, the Belgian was not at all prepared for David Luiz’s cheeky free-kick, which flew past him to give Chelsea the lead.

However, he seemed to make amends with a decent save to deny the Brazilian defender a quick-fire second, before expertly saving a Diego Costa penalty to keep the scores level following Georginio Wijanldum’s equaliser. While Mignolet isn’t always adored by the Kop faithful, there’s little doubt he had a big role in keeping the Reds’ title aspirations alive.

In fact, following his save, he’s now saved SIX of the 14 penalties he’s faced in goal for the Merseyside titans in the Premier League, more than any other stopper in the history of the club. A pretty amazing statistic, one the punters at the bar have gasped at.

Does Mignolet deserve the levels of criticism he gets? Let us know below…
