Liverpool supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern in the last week or so after seeing their side all but seal their place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League courtesy of a 5-0 thrashing of Porto in the first leg of their last 16 encounter on Wednesday.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash with the Portuguese giants off the back of beating Southampton 2-0 in the Premier League a few days earlier, a result which moved them to within two points of second place Manchester United. And the Reds continued their fine recent run of form on Wednesday as a hat-trick from Sadio Mane as well as strikes from Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino sealed a comprehensive victory for the Merseyside giants, all but booking their spot in the last eight ahead of the return leg in a fortnight’s time.
Subsequently, there have been many delighted Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are likely to be intrigued by a recent interview on French TV channel Telefoot (via The Liverpool Echo) with Watford’s Abdoulaye Doucoure, in which he has confirmed that the Reds have expressed an interest in his services.
The 25-year-old made the move to Vicarage Road back in 2016 and has gone from strength to strength with the Hertfordshire-based outfit, netting seven goals and laying on three assists in just 26 Premier League games for the Hornets this term to help them to 11th place in the division.
But it has been his all round efforts in the centre of midfield which have seemingly attracted the attention of some of the biggest clubs in the country, with Arsenal, Tottenham, and of course Liverpool reportedly linked with the Frenchman in recent times.
And the man himself has confirmed that interest, saying: ‘It’s true that these clubs are interested.
‘But I’m at Watford for the moment and I want to finish my season well.’
And these comments are likely to intrigue our resident Liverpool fans, with interest in Doucoure perhaps suggesting that midfielder Emre Can will indeed leave in the summer, with the Watford man lined up as a possible replacement.
Landlord’s verdict: Abdoulaye Doucoure has earned many rave reviews for his efforts in Watford’s midfield this season, netting seven goals and laying on three assists to help the Hornets to 11th place in the Premier League.
It’s not just his contributions in the final third though that have many keeping tabs on the 25-year-old, with the Frenchman underlining his all round midfield qualities with a particularly dominant performance against Chelsea a few weeks ago.
And interest has been reported in his services from the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham, and indeed Liverpool, interest which the man himself has since confirmed in news likely to intrigue our resident Liverpudlians.
And with Emre Can set to leave in the summer, Jurgen Klopp may indeed see Doucoure as the ideal replacement for the Germany international.
