Liverpool fans were gutted to see Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold return home from Russia empty-handed.
The Three Lions surprised everyone with their performances as they reached the semi-final of the World Cup. A 2-1 defeat to Croatia dashed hopes of a World Cup final before losing to Belgium in the third-place play-off. Nevertheless, the 23-man squad exceeded all expectations.
Henderson and Alexander-Arnold will be given an extended break from pre-season as Jurgen Klopp assesses his squad. The German has been busy in the transfer window thus far, bolstering his ranks ahead of the new campaign. Many Liverpool fans want to see Klopp sign a centre-back this summer.
Dejan Lovren’s form has been terrific but the Croatian remains inconsistent and a liability at times throughout the season. Instead of landing a new defender, Klopp should trust Joe Gomez to be Virgil van Dijk’s partner in defence.
Valued at £19.8m by Transfermarkt, Gomez played a crucial part as Liverpool finished fourth and reached the final of the Champions League. The 21-year-old started 21 Premier Leagues games, but all of them came at right-back. While he performed well at full-back, Gomez needs to be moved to the middle.
The former Charlton man excelled for England at centre-back against Brazil, keeping Neymar quiet and making more interceptions than any other player. He was expected to travel to Russia before injury curtailed his season. Gomez has all the attributes to excel in the heart of the defence.
It’s time Klopp followed Gareth Southgate’s approach and solve his defensive problems.
