With the Premier League title race heating up, Liverpool’s been dealt a huge blow with the revelation (via the BBC) of defender Joe Gomez requiring surgery on his leg fracture he suffered against Burnley in December. The pressure gets piled up on the Reds defence, with Dejan Lovren also sidelined with a hamstring injury.
Gomez was a breakthrough player for Liverpool in the first half of the season, forming a superb partnership with Virgil Van Dijk at the heart of the defence. The young English centre-back kept things tidy at the back, creating an almost telepathic connection with the Dutch defender. Gomez followed the orders of Van Dijk and was encouraged to be more aggressive without being rash.
Gomez made 71 recoveries for the Reds in his 13 Premier League appearances, making 54 duels, 24 of which were aerial ones. A strong yet clean defender, he only got booked twice and made 12 fouls.
He also allowed Van Dijk to operate freely in defence, often covering his companion’s mistake, while also looking out for him at the back. With Joel Matip riddled with inconsistency and Dejan Lovren too error-prone, both Van Dijk as well as Liverpool will miss Gomez’s services in the business end of the season.
As crucial games crumble up ahead in February, the Reds had hoped Gomez would be back to stabilize their defence. Now that it’s not happening, Jurgen Klopp’s men will struggle to snap-up easy wins, which were a regular thing with Gomez supporting Van Dijk in defence.Like what the TT have on offer?
