Liverpool enjoyed a quiet end to the summer transfer window after completing the majority of their business during the opening weeks.
The Reds faced heartbreak following an excellent season after losing 3-1 to Real Madrid in the Champions League final. Despite the defeat, there were signs that Liverpool were on the cusp of something great after securing a top-four finish for the second season in a row under Klopp; for the first time in a decade. The German moved quickly to identify the targets that will improve his squad.
Just days after the final, Liverpool announced a massive deal for Monaco midfielder – Fabinho. The Brazilian was joined at the club by Naby Keita whose arrival was announced last summer. Xherdan Shaqiri completed a cut-price deal from Stoke, and the Reds splashed a then world-record fee to sign Roma’s Alisson Becker. The Reds now look well-equipped to end their search for silverware.
Keita and Fabinho will add two world-class options to the centre of the pitch. Liverpool have been crying out for a defensive midfielder since Javier Mascherano left and Fabinho will now allow the creative players in the squad to flourish. With the world-class Keita ahead of him, Liverpool boast one of the best midfields in the Premier League.
Shaqiri was a polarising figure on Merseyside prior to his arrival at the club. His numbers at Stoke were excellent considering the quality of their squad, but problems with his attitude put many fans off signing him. However, his tremendous pre-season performances have quickly won over the Anfield faithful. With Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino unlikely to miss just three games again, the Swiss international gives Liverpool some much-needed depth and a quality option from the bench.
Liverpool outscored every team but Manchester City last season but conceding goals was a huge problem. The arrival of Virgil van Dijk in January undoubtedly improved their fortunes, but Loris Karius’ mistakes against Madrid highlighted the need for a goalkeeper. Klopp initially kept faith in the German before more errors in pre-season forced his hand. In Alisson Becker, Liverpool finally have a goalkeeper that can lead them to a Premier League title.
Their new signings are superb by tying Firmino, and Salah down to new contracts were equally important this summer. Mane is expected to follow suit and commit his future to the club in the near future. Liverpool are no longer seen as a stepping stone and finally have a squad that is capable of adding their 19th league title.
Liverpool fans, how would you rate your summer transfer window out of 10 and why?
