Liverpool supporters have been pretty despondent in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side suffer a fourth Premier League defeat of the campaign last time out, going down 2-1 at Manchester United.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their meeting with the Red Devils just two points behind them in the table, and having won each of their preceding three league matches. Yet a first half brace from Marcus Rashford proved to be the difference at Old Trafford last weekend, and although the Reds did get one back in the second period courtesy of Eric Bailly’s own goal, Klopp’s side weren’t able to get the all-important equaliser to prevent a fourth league loss of the campaign, and thus their slip to fourth place in the Premier League table.
As such, there have been many disappointed Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom didn’t take long to forget about Saturday’s defeat to United, instead turning their attentions towards this weekend’s home clash with Watford.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Reds fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking Chelsea forward Willian with a move to United in the summer.
Yet given the Brazil international’s hugely impressive season to date, as well as the quality he would bring to the Liverpool frontline off the ball, the Merseyside giants should try their hand with an audacious move for the £28.8 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) this summer.
Ultimately, the 29-year-old is enjoying his most impressive season to date since moving to Stamford Bridge back in 2013, having netted 13 goals and laid on ten assists in 45 appearances for Antonio Conte’s side, six goals and seven assists of which coming in the Premier League.
Yet it has been a measure of his progression that he has become a more regular feature in the Chelsea starting eleven in the last few months, and with goals against United and Barcelona in recent times, the forward has also been able to produce the goods on the big stage – add in his wonderful set piece ability, and the Brazilian would strengthen the frontline of any Premier League side.
Clearly, Willian is an exceptional forward with bags of pace and trickery, but it is also what he offers off the ball which will be of interest to Klopp, as the 29-year-old has a relentless work-ethic and certainly leads from the front when it comes to chasing down and pressing the opposition.
Thus, not only would he be a useful addition on the ball, but he has the capabilities to buy into Klopp’s philosophy off it as well, thus providing the Liverpool chief with another excellent option in his forward ranks.
And with Sadio Mane’s form having been reasonably inconsistent at times this season, Willian wouldn’t just be signed to make up the numbers – he’ll be pushing the likes of Mane and Mohamed Salah for regular first team football.
Obviously, reuniting with Jose Mourinho at United appears to be a more likely outcome, but with Liverpool playing some of the most exciting football in the Premier League at present, and clearly going places under Klopp, the 29-year-old could well be tempted by a move to Anfield. And his strengths would undoubtedly benefit the Merseyside giants.
As such, Klopp must urge FSG to launch an audacious move for the Brazil international this summer.
