The Liverpool fans here in the Transfer Tavern have largely been delighted with the nature of their campaign this season, despite some frustrating inconsistencies. Indeed, the punters propping up the bar haven’t stopped raving about some of their attacking play, though the defence is seemingly as suspect as ever.
With that in mind, some of our resident Reds are already starting to discuss potential targets for the summer. Manchester City have already wrapped up the Premier League title and no one truly expects the Reds to win the Champions League, so it’s time to look ahead as to who can come in and solidify the backline.
Virgil van Dijk’s arrival will only truly be felt next season and, with Naby Keita coming in to add some drive into midfield, the punters propping up our bar believe Jurgen Klopp should look to strengthen his defensive midfield.
Having said that, he could do a lot worse than moving for Oriol Romeu. The road between Southampton and Anfield is a well-trodden one in recent seasons and, considering the nature of the Saints’ campaign, it’s not hard to imagine some of their star players wanting out.
Romeu is a wonderful defensive midfielder. The Spaniard can strange opposition attacks as soon as they start, though his distribution is also something to shout about. A graduate of the famed La Masia academy, the former Barcelona and Chelsea youngster could win the ball back before setting up a searing counter, with the likes of Mo Salah and Sadio Mane running ahead of him.
Rated at just £10.8m by Transfermarkt, the 26-year-old would have a transformative effect on the Liverpool midfield, potentially making them one of the best in Europe next season.
