Liverpool supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern during the international break, with the Reds battering Watford 5-0 in the Premier League in their final game before the two-week interruption.
Jurgen Klopp’s men were the only team in the top eight in league action last time out due to FA Cup commitments, and the Merseysiders took full advantage to move seven points clear of fifth place Chelsea in the race for a top four spot. And Mohamed Salah was again the man of the moment with four goals in the rout, while Roberto Firmino added the other to clinch a routine victory for Klopp’s side, and one that moved them above Tottenham into third place in the Premier League table.
As such, there have been many buoyant Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are eagerly anticipating their side’s clash with Crystal Palace on Saturday, as Klopp’s men eye a fifth win in their last six league games.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Reds fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that Watford may have to sell target Abdoulaye Doucoure in the summer.
And were the Merseyside giants indeed able to get a deal done for the 25-year-old during the close season, it could well spell the end of James Milner’s time in the North West.
Ultimately, the 32-year-old has been a great servant to Liverpool ever since making the move to Anfield from Manchester City back in 2015, with the former England international appearing 121 times for the Reds, bagging 15 goals and laying on 27 assists in the process.
Significantly though, the former Leeds United and Newcastle man has often done a job for the team, be it filling in at left back last season due to the poor form of Alberto Moreno, or indeed playing out wide as opposed to his more natural central midfield position.
However, with Klopp’s squad beginning to take shape, Milner hasn’t always been a feature in the starting eleven this season, with just 12 Premier League starts to his name so far, and five in their other domestic and European commitments.
And with Klopp boosting central midfield options in the form of Jordan Henderson, Georginio Wijnaldum, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Adam Lallana, and Emre Can, the 32-year-old is already far enough down the pecking order, yet alone Doucoure’s possible arrival, and indeed Keita’s definite arrival, in the summer.
Although Can is set to leave the club in the summer at the expiration of his contract, of the aforementioned Liverpool players, Milner’s contract is the next to expire, and with the left back situation much steadier following the summer arrival of Andrew Robertson, he is unlikely to be called upon there again either.
Thus, were Doucoure to make the move to Anfield this summer, it would surely bring about the end of £10.8 million-rated (as per Transfermarkt) Milner’s time at the Merseyside giants.
