Liverpool supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side get back to winning ways in the Premier League courtesy of a 2-0 success over relegation-threatened Southampton on Sunday.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash with the Saints off the back of drawing 2-2 with fellow top four chasers Tottenham in their last league outing, a result which came as a disappointment given they led the North London outfit heading into the last few moments. Yet the Reds put that behind them and eased to victory on the South Coast on Sunday, with goals from Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah sealing a routine win for Klopp’s side, who moved to within two points of second place Manchester United as a result.
Subsequently, there have been many delighted Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are eagerly anticipating their team’s clash with Porto in the first leg of their last 16 clash in the Champions League this evening.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Reds fans to discuss, not least the recent speculation surrounding the future of Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld, whose contract expires in 2019.
Manchester City and Chelsea are reportedly keen on the 28-year-old, yet it is Klopp’s Liverpool who simply must make a move for the influential ace, as luring him to Anfield would finally turn the Merseyside giants into Premier League title contenders.
Ultimately, Liverpool’s issues in the last few seasons have been at the back, conceding far too many goals for a side desiring to compete with the best teams in the division – last term, their tally of 42 goals against was 16 more than Tottenham, the lowest in the league.
It’s not just the amount of goals though, many of them have been sloppy or have come from defensive mistakes – they wouldn’t get that from Alderweireld.
The 28-year-old played a huge part in that outstanding defensive record Pochettino’s Spurs had last season, and in the last few years since his first taste of English football at Southampton, the Belgium international has comfortably become one of the division’s best centre-backs.
The Reds spent £75 million on Saints’ Virgil van Dijk in January in a bid to shore up their leaky backline, but one man won’t entirely change that defence, as has been demonstrated in his first few weeks as a Liverpool player.
Yet adding Alderweireld alongside the towering Netherlands international would significantly strengthen that back four – no longer will the Reds be bullied when defending set plays or when faced with the bigger strikers in the division. That duo would have everything to succeed at the very top of the Premier League.
Clearly, the attacking threat is there through the likes of Salah, Firmino, and Sadio Mane – it’s going backwards where things have to be improved, and there’s little doubt that Alderweireld’s arrival would do just that.
It may be tricky convincing him away from Spurs, or indeed to move to Anfield over City or Chelsea, but if Liverpool are serious about becoming genuine title contenders, the £31.5 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt) is the man that can take them to that next level.
