It's safe to say that Liverpool are putting together a squad that is going to compete with City for the league next year.

Aside from a new goalkeeper or central defender, Liverpool have one of the best teams in Europe. The front three is absolutely devastating while the midfield got a facelift this summer with the arrivals of Fabinho and Naby Keita.

At the back, however, the Reds need to upgrade desperately. While the signing of Virgil Van Dijk improved Liverpool massively, Klopp needs to get the dominant centreback an adequate partner. Dejan Lovren has at times shown flashes that he might be ok for the team but overall, he just makes far too many mistakes.

Due to the Croatian's form, Liverpool have been on the hunt for a new defender, and have been strongly linked with his international teammate Domagoj Vida. According to Fanatik, Liverpool have now submitted a second bid of £18 million for the Besiktas defender. He may be a solid defender but if Liverpool have any sense, they should consider signing one of these two defenders.

The Newcastle captain has been subject to a bid from West Ham, which was rejected by Newcastle.

An absolute rock for Benitez, at only Lascelles, was an integral part in Newcastle only conceding 47 goals last season. At only 24, the defender has shown incredible maturity and leadership since he joined the club.

Similar to Van Dijk in terms of physicality, Lascelles would give Liverpool an impenetrable defence.

Although he's only 23, it feels like Zouma has been playing at the top level for about a decade.

Following a terrible injury two seasons ago, Zouma spent last year on loan at Stoke City where he managed to play 34 games. He seems like he might be surplus to goods at Chelsea, therefore a cut-price deal could be on the cards for Liverpool. A rock and a player with a point to prove, he could rediscover his very best form at Anfield.
