Frankly, Southampton probably deserve at least some sort of credit for Liverpool's success. Indeed, by bringing prime talents like Sadio Mane and Virgil Van Dijk to England, the Saints inadvertently handed the Reds two of their biggest weapons in their journey to becoming European champions.

The road between St. Mary's and Anfield has been a well-trodden in recent years with the likes of Nathaniel Clyne, Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and Rickie Lambert also making the trip in the last five years and that rather strange market trend doesn't appear to be slowing down. That's because, according to Daily Star, Klopp is allegedly keen on adding Alex McCarthy to his squad as his new number two next season.

Not a particularly inspiring rumour, granted, but potentially a very smart move.

After seeing some of Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet's unconvincing performances in the red shirt, fans will be well aware of how important it is to have a reliable 'keeper waiting in the wings.

The report also suggests Simon Mignolet is set to leave Anfield, so a swoop on the former Reading custodian would make sense. Having averaged more than 3.1 saves (stats via WhoScored) per 90 mins last season, it's not hard to understand why Klopp’s interested in the shot-stopper as a backup to Allison.

Even in spite of having a fairly leaky defence in front of him, the 29-year-old managed to keep four clean-sheets for the Saints last season, even earning a call-up to the English national side. A reliable pair of hands, the 29-year-old actually lost his place down on the south coast anyway towards the end of the season, so perhaps a move to Anfield would appeal to him, even as an understudy.

Six years ago after he heroically kept the Reds at bay after which Brendan Rodgers (via The Guardian) hailed McCarthy as “simply the best”, it seems a late reward could be in place for him with a potential move to Anfield this summer.

Liverpool fans, would you be happy at McCarthy potentially replacing Mignolet next season? Join the discussion by commenting below...
