Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern were taken aback this week by surprise reports that linked them to a significant veteran addition.
Betting has been suspended on Spanish World Cup winner Iker Casillas moving to Anfield from Porto this summer, although The Liverpool Echo states there is no chance of the move happening and that the Reds have been left baffled by the reports.
The Reds signed Loris Karius from Mainz last summer and the German has struggled to find consistency, which has allowed Belgian stopper Simon Mignolet to reclaim the first-team spot; and Jurgen Klopp is happy with his options between the sticks.
That means Reds fans hoping to see Real Madrid legend Casillas in Liverpool colours are set to be disappointed, despite the 36-year-old being available on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract with Porto.
Rather than sign a new stopper, Klopp will keep faith in Mignolet and Karius, with Danny Ward set to return to the first-team fold after a successful loan stint with Huddersfield Town – where his last appearance for the Championship side will be Monday’s play-off final against Reading.
