Dejan Lovren is set for showdown talks with Jurgen Klopp ahead of a potential exit this summer, report Football Insider, and Paul Robinson believes the Reds are eyeing Leeds United’s loan star Ben White.
According to Football Insider, Lovren’s injury woes and lack of availability over the last couple of seasons have become a ‘growing concern’. The report claims the Croatia international will thrash out his future with Klopp this summer, with a possibility that the club will listen to offers. White, who is on loan at Elland Road from Brighton, is being scouted as a replacement.
Lovren has fallen well down the pecking order at Anfield since the arrival of Virgil van Dijk and emergence of Joe Gomez, with the pair starting all but one of the last 13 Premier League matches together in the heart of defence – Gomez was injured for the 3-0 defeat at Watford, a match in which Lovren was heavily criticised.
Robinson, who is a regular at Leeds’ Thorp Arch headquarters as his son is part of the academy, says the Reds are indeed eyeing White: “I’m hearing they’re looking at Ben White at Leeds,” the ex-Spurs keeper said. “Brighton will want him back.
“He has had a fantastic season and I suspect Liverpool would look at him to play alongside Van Dijk, and or Gomez. Lovren has not had a lot of game time but he is improved. If he leaves they will be looking at somebody like Ben White to come in.”
Joining on loan from Brighton last summer, White has been nothing short of sensational for Marcelo Bielsa’s side this season, with some even calling for him to play for England. The 22 year-old was hailed as ‘massive’ by Darren Bent earlier this season, and it’s not hard to see why when you delve into his numbers.
The youngster averages a higher pass accuracy (85%) than Lovren (83%), and he also makes far more interceptions per game (2.3 to 1), suggesting he reads the game much more intelligently than the World Cup finalist. Jamie Carragher has recently slammed Lovren for wanting to “fight everyone” rather than be cute with his defending, and even at 22 White is already showing a superior football IQ, receiving praise for his patience and maturity with Bielsa even claiming it is “not normal” for a defender to do the things he can do and.
Adding White to Gomez, van Dijk and Joel Matip would give Klopp four excellent centre-backs with the perfect mixture of youth and experience.
