Liverpool: Bilel Hassaini could be lured to Anfield

Liverpool are “well-positioned” to sign teenage French forward Bilel Hassaini on a free transfer this summer.

Foot Mercato reported that the 18-year-old is attracting interest from the European champions, with Arsenal and Saint-Etienne also keeping tabs on him.

The France under-17 international had previously been the subject of interest from Paris Saint-Germain, according to Foot Mercato, but that now seems to have waned.

Hassaini had been playing with Nancy’s under-19 squad but had yet to make a senior appearance for the club prior to his departure.

He played 11 times for the France under-17 side and also has 15 caps for the French under-16s, for whom he scored once.

If Liverpool were to sign him, it seems very unlikely that he would immediately be in contention for first-team appearances, given that he has never played a competitive match at senior level.

However, he fits the age profile of the players that Jurgen Klopp has either signed already this summer or is currently targeting.

Liverpool’s only signing so far in the current transfer window is Sepp van den Berg, the 17-year-old Dutch defender having joined from PEC Zwolle.

The Reds are also favoured to land 16-year-old Fulham midfielder Harvey Elliott, as reported by The Telegraph.

If Hassaini joins Liverpool, it would most likely be with an eye to bolstering their youth teams rather than the senior squad, and even as it stands he faces plenty of competition for a place in the Reds’ youth sides.

Rhian Brewster, Bobby Duncan, Liam Millar, Ben Woodburn and Ryan Kent are all young forwards who have appeared for Liverpool’s first team in pre-season games recently, with the former scoring three in two games and Duncan also on target.

By joining Liverpool, Hassaini would be coming into what is already a crowded marketplace in terms of forward players.

However, with clubs of the stature of Arsenal and PSG also declaring an interest in him, he seems to have plenty of promise, while his availability on a free transfer should make it a risk-free deal with the potential for high reward in future years.

Liverpool should make a move for him now while they can get him on a free and, if they sign him, a loan move or two could help with his development like it has for Harry Wilson, scorer of 18 goals on loan at Derby last season.
