Liverpool: Caoimhin Kelleher injury could spell disaster for Reds

Liverpool: Caoimhin Kelleher injury could spell disaster for Reds - Liverpool

Reports are claiming that Caoimhin Kelleher is likely to play no further part in Liverpool’s 2019/20 season after suffering a serious knee injury (via Football Insider).

The 21-year-old was expected to feature on the bench for Liverpool’s last two matches given Alisson’s injury but a blow to his knee has kept him out of the squad. It is understood that the injury is not down to a ligament tear, but it is indeed enough to see him miss the remainder of this season.

Kelleher also battled with an injury last year as he underwent surgery in the summer on a broken wrist (via Liverpool).

The severity of the Irishman’s injury is still uncertain, but another sidelined goalkeeper is far from ideal for the Reds. Alisson’s latest update has revealed he will be out of action until at least the international break, meaning he will miss the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park and the crucial Champions League second leg against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.

Adrian is now Liverpool’s only available ‘tried and tested’ shot-stopper. Andy Lonergan will be the back-up goalkeeper until Alisson returns from a hip injury, but the 36-year-old is yet to play a single minute for the Reds (via Transfermarkt).

Despite Adrian already having some heroics to be proud of, his performances of late have left little to be desired. At least a section of fans seemingly aren’t confident in the Spaniard’s ability in the net as they prepare to host Atletico at Anfield. With Liverpool’s third-choice goalkeeper now ruled out, there’s even more pressure on Adrian to not just deliver a 10/10 performance, but ensure he doesn’t suffer any knocks.

If Adrian picks up any sort of injury against Atletico Madrid this week, the Reds will be looking at an ageing goalkeeper who hasn’t stepped foot on the pitch yet to see them through the rest of this campaign.

With that in mind and, while it’s unlikely anything will happen to change their league position, being so low in one area is an obvious concern with European ambition in mind.
