It’s that time yet again. After a break, the Champions League is back, and Liverpool are looking to make history yet again.

After losing in the final last year, the Reds will be eager to end their mini European final curse and get back amongst the genuine elite of teams on the continent, and with Liverpool facing off against a familiar foe in FC Porto, passage to the semi-final seems all but confirmed for some fans already.

Although Porto will prove a much stronger test for Liverpool this time around with the Portuguese side strengthening both with quality on the pitch and results in Europe, the Reds go into this quarter-final series the heavy favourites.

But if the Liga NOS side are able to pull off an upset and knock Jurgen Klopp’s side out of Europe, it won’t be the worst thing ever for the club and could ultimately set the side up for the trophy Liverpool and the fans really want this season, the Premier League title.

Very few teams have the squad depth and fitness to mount both a charge for the league title and European success, with Manchester City, Juventus and Barcelona the only realistic teams in the current game who could achieve such a momentous feat, and for Liverpool, they simply don’t have the depth in quality to go for both accolades.

A Champions League win would be an incredible achievement for Liverpool, but if you are to ask any Reds fan what trophy would they prefer to focus on more, nine out of ten times it will be the league title, something the club has not won since 1990.

A surprise elimination from the Champions League at this stage will not only ease up fixture congestion for Klopp, but allow his players to solely focus on the league, compared to City who have the league, European football and an FA Cup final to focus on.

Nobody likes to see their side be knocked out in Europe early, but in Liverpool’s case, it could be the best thing to happen to them this season.
