Halfway through the season, Jurgen Klopp’s campaign has been fairly successful with Liverpool but it’s clear the Reds are still lacking in certain areas.
The Merseyside giants are currently Chelsea’s closest competitors in the Premier League, sat five points behind, but it’s clear their squad is still weaker than the rest of their top-six rivals.
Whilst Liverpool’s ranks are full of capable players, Klopp’s options for match-winners are limited; especially this month with Sadio Mane away at the African Cup of Nations and Philippe Coutinho only just returning to training.
Meanwhile, their rivals at the top of the pile have match winners across their squad and also have other players hitting top form, namely Dele Alli at Tottenham Hotspur and Olivier Giroud at Arsenal.
With Mane and Coutinho excluded, Liverpool’s options for a big-name match winner are lacking as Roberto Firmino isn’t quite at the top level, although indeed not too far off, whilst Daniel Sturridge lacks the fitness to be reliable.
What’s concerning for Liverpool is the fact that no member of their squad has hit double figures in goals this season and only Roberto Firmino, Adam Lallana and Mane, Liverpool’s top scorer, have more than five goals.
In the January window, Jurgen Klopp should definitely consider offloading Daniel Sturridge and replacing him with a top-class striker who can hit the 20-goal mark consistently every season- an area where they lack when compared to their rivals.
Chelsea have Diego Costa, Manchester United have Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Tottenham have Harry Kane, Manchester City have Sergio Aguero and Arsenal have Oliver Giroud. Whilst you may snigger at the latter, the lowest tally he’s managed in English football is 17 for a season- his first year.
Whilst you may argue that the days of top-class strikers being unearthed everywhere are behind us, there’s still plenty of names out there; Antoine Griezmann, Alexander Lacazette, Mauro Icardi and Paulo Dybala to name a few.
All of those names are unlikely recruits for Liverpool, barring perhaps Lacazette, but Klopp should certainly look to land a top-class striker this month if his side are to continue competing.
