ESPN pundit Alejandro Moreno believes there is ‘no chance’ that RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner will be joining Liverpool in the January transfer window.
According to German outlet Bild (via Daily Star), Werner is thought to have set Liverpool in his sights after citing a desire to work with Jurgen Klopp setting them apart from fellow potential suitors Chelsea.
However, speaking to ESPN FC, Moreno insisted that Leipzig would be extremely unlikely to let their striker go with the German outfit currently four points clear in the Bundesliga ahead of long-time reigning champions Bayern Munich.
He said: “It’s not happening now. Leipzig are in the middle of a title race in the Bundesliga – could they be the team that breaks through and beats Bayern Munich and runs away with the Bundesliga? They’re right there – if you’re Leipzig, there is no chance you’re getting rid of the guy who’s scoring the goals for you and who is so influential in what you’re doing in attack.”
Is Timo Werner worth over £50m?
Having scored 25 goals in all competitions this term, it would be of little surprise if Leipzig weren’t so keen on cashing in on their striker midway through what could be a historic season for the club which has only been in existence in its present form since 2009.
With 20 of Werner’s strikes coming in 18 top-flight appearances, he could argue to be one of Europe’s in-form strikers. As Leipzig are also in contention for continental honours, too – with a Champions League knockout tie against Spurs to come next month – it seems as though Werner has plenty of unfinished business despite a stellar season in front of goal in Germany. Meanwhile, things aren’t going too badly for Liverpool, either.
Therefore, there doesn’t appear to be too many reasons to disagree with Moreno’s take, especially with less than two weeks of the current window remaining. With both teams heading towards the business ends of their respective campaigns, they could perhaps do without negotiating a potential deal, while there does not seem to be a particular need for reinforcements on Merseyside such has been the ease of Liverpool’s title challenge so far.
