Former Premier League footballer Danny Mills believes the performances of Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson have gone unnoticed this season, arguing that the Brazilian’s positioning allows him to make things look easy between the sticks for the Reds.
Alisson has kept goal for the Premier League’s best defence – with Liverpool’s tally for conceded goals of 15 some nine fewer than what Leicester City have let in so far this season.
That is thanks in part to Alisson’s seven Premier League clean sheets (as per the official PL website) which came back-to-back in an incredible run that was ended on Thursday night when Raul Jimenez headed in an equaliser for Wolves. Speaking to Football Insider, Mills paid tribute to the ‘keeper’s recent displays.
He said: “Alisson is an exceptional goalkeeper, but he doesn’t do drama very often. He’s in the right place at the right time to make what looks like a comfortable save. You very rarely see him have to make those incredible saves because he’s out of position or the defence have let him down.
“He doesn’t really have too many disasters. He’s one of those that goes under the radar which is the perfect scenario from a goalkeeper. You don’t want a goalkeeper making incredible saves every single game. Alisson is calmness personified.”
Would Coutinho get into this Liverpool XI?
It is no wonder that in a team as successful as Liverpool, the goalkeeper has emerged as something of an unsung hero. With Liverpool currently on an incredible run of form, the Reds’ efforts are rather understandably dominated by those at the attacking end of the pitch.
Of course, that does not mean Alisson is a bystander as far as Liverpool’s attacking threat is concerned – with the shot-stopper providing an assist for Mohamed Salah in the recent victory over Manchester United.
Alisson may have had his mad moments – including getting injured on the opening day and getting sent off for a handball against Brighton in November. However, given Liverpool have won by the odd goal seven times in the league this season with the 27-year-old manning the Reds’ goal, there is little doubting Alisson’s input to Liverpool’s enormous points tally.
Therefore, perhaps it is only right that the likes of Mills highlight Alisson’s worth to the side that is on the brink of history.
