Liverpool face Arsenal & Chelsea in bid to land Klopp’s top defensive target

The immediate future of Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk has been a recurring subject of discussion in the Transfer Tavern throughout this season.

The Dutchman seemed destined to claim a place in the PFA Team of the Season during the first half of the campaign, but a season-ending injury in January – at the hands of Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy – saw him quickly drop out of the running.

Nonetheless, such was the 25-year-old’s form during the first half of the season, he’s emerged as a prime target for several of Southampton’s Premier League rivals. In fact, The Times describe him as Liverpool’s top defensive target for the summer transfer window, eclipsing their interest in Burnley centre-back Michael Keane.

The Reds are certainly in need of defensive additions this summer; they’e conceded the most goals of any side in the Premier League’s top seven; but they’re by no means the only club looking to whisk van Dijk away from St. Mary’s.

Indeed, Mirror Football claim Chelsea are in pole position to sign van Dijk in a £50million deal but Arsenal are hoping to hijack their pursuit of the former Celtic man, as Arsene Wenger looks to implement the 3-4-3 formation that provided a win against Middlesbrough on a more permanent basis next season.

Liverpool fans in the Tavern, however, are still confident the Reds can out-muscle both clubs to land van Dijk’s services, in no small part due to the club’s seemingly ongoing relationship with Southampton in the transfer market.
