Liverpool: Fans appreciate Carlo Ancelotti’s comments after defeat to Napoli

Napoli manager Carlo Ancelotti seemed magnanimous in victory last night after his side defeated Liverpool 2-0 in their opening Champions League group stage clash.

James Pearce, Liverpool reporter for The Athletic, tweeted post-match reaction from Ancelotti in which he said that the Reds had “taken complete control of the game” before Napoli’s two late goals “came from curious and unusual circumstances“. [via @JamesPearceLFC]

Napoli had recorded just one shot between the 54th and 81st minute when they were awarded a penalty after Andrew Robertson was adjudged to have fouled Jose Callejon, even though the contact appeared minimal. VAR also failed to overturn the decision, giving Dries Mertens the chance to score from the spot and give Napoli the lead. [via Sky Sports]

The insurance goal came in stoppage time after an uncharacteristic error from UEFA Men’s Player of the Year Virgil van Dijk, whose misplaced pass ended up at the feet of Fernando Llorente and the substitute dispatched it to the net to complete a 2-0 victory. [via Sky Sports]

These Liverpool fans on Twitter were appreciative of Ancelotti’s acknowledgement about his team’s two goals:
